These are the LEGO party favors they got from Clark's birthday party yesterday.

They brought half an hour's peace and quiet this morning!!

They suddenly decided to "help" me make the pancakes this morning.

This involved finding aprons, cutting off unwanted ribbons, clowning around and pretending the bowl was a hat and that Max was eating all the powder.

Then they got busy assembling all the ingredients, taking it in turns to put the pancake powder in the bowl (big mess!), pour the milk (bigger mess), crack the eggs (ultimate mess) and, finally, whisk in the oil. (They really needed those aprons).  Then they stirred the resulting mix and managed to keep some of it in the bowl.  We will hose down the kitchen later!

We cooked the pancakes but Max decided he didn't want any pancakes.  What?  Maybe he knew they were fatally compromised?

Veronica had a big one and a small one—and there was enough mix left over for Mummy and Daddy to have pancakes too.

Phew!!

Guest Blog Post: The Ice Age recedes!

Gramps likes to go for walks in the Fells across from our house. We had a few days in a row of unseasonable warm weather (highs in the 60s and 70s). Gramps took these two photos one day apart!

Max shows us how elastic his Mac n' Cheese is!

It got to 68F this afternoon so after several days inside with colds they got a bit of sunshine at the park.  It actually felt hot and there were requests for the A/C in the car on the way home!!

A moment of quiet reflection...

Amazingly, Max ate half an apple, rice crispies AND a plate of scrambled eggs!  Veronica ate apple and pancake.  So far, so good.

I had adobo rice for lunch and took my pills and my horrible red cherry medicine.

I have been a very good boy for Gramps and he says I can watch one episode before compulsory rest. If I don't rest for 1 hour I do understand I will never be able to watch TV for the rest of my life.

Hope you are having a fun day too and getting plenty of rest.

Max

Off to see the Batman Lego movie!

We went out for brunch yesterday at the resto that used to be MASA but is now called THE LOCAL.  The food was excellent.

By popular demand, we then went to Toys R Us and then on to Whole Foods.

Even though there is snow everywhere, we have had three days of sunshine.  We might go sledding in the woods today.

NOVA on PBS: Why Trains Crash

NOVA on PBS aired a show last night titled "Why Trains Crash". They highlighted 3 major train accidents that have happened recently: Chatsworth, Philadelphia (Amtrak 188), and Lac-Megantic in Canada. These very severe (= many fatalities) accidents are part of the driving force of the research we conduct in my division at The Volpe Center. They interviewed my Rail Vehicle Crashworthiness program manager, David Tyrell, and showed a few full-scale train tests and my computer simulations. Here is the complete episode:

My work can be seen at the following times:
14:57 The Crash Energy Management (CEM) Train-to-Train Test that showed the efficacy of the protoype CEM system in mitigating the effects of an impact
16:41 The narrator talks about CEM
16:53 These are my computer simulations of the CEM system at work during a head-on collision of 2 trains
37:00 The CEM Train-to-Train Test again
37:05 The same computer simulation of the CEM system.

I was so excited that my work was on TV (David hadn't told me he'd given them the simulations and test video), that I took a few photos of my TV!

I'm so proud of the work I've done and am doing in saving lives in train accidents.

The full episode on the PBS website can be found here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/why-trains-crash.html

Guest Blog Post: Turkeys & Hornets

This is an email from Gramps (UI), who is currently visiting. It's full of great photos so I'm making it a Guest Blog Post. Thanks, Gramps!

Subject: Turkeys & Hornets

We had three turkeys in the garden this morning—here are two of them!

Then we took Max to his basketball game.  It was the last one of the season.  He scored a great basket in the first quarter and also got two near misses in the third and last quarter.  He dribbles well, blocks well and even played for a while with a stomach cramp.  Such a hero!

Poor Veronica has a bad cough and cold so was not able to join us.  I will send some photos of her when she is better.

Max Daycare Photos: Skeleton

Hi guys,
Today our discussion was on the human skeleton. We learned that the skeleton is important for many reasons. Max shared "Your skeleton is important for holding you up straight. If you didn't have one you'd be dead." Max was surprised to learn that human teeth are actually stronger then human bones. He commented "but they're so small".
Max then put together a skeleton puzzle and a paper version.
Have a great night,
Jen

Holidays in Los Angeles 2016

Since Jose is on tour for The King & I, we all decided to spend the holidays in Los Angeles with him. We got there a couple of days before Christmas and came home on New Year's Day. Here are the photo albums from the trip! Click on the titles of the albums to go to the photos and videos.

Album #1: La Brea & Noche Buena
Our first full day in LA was spent checking out the La Brea Tar Pits and hanging out outside the LA County Museum of Art next door. The hotel Jose chose was centrally located and so close to these museums that we walked to them! Walking is unheard of in LA.
On Dec. 24, we celebrated Noche Buena, as Filipinos do, with an awesome catered spread in J&E's room, then the kids opened gifts in our room. We also found out that Jose & Erik had recently gotten engaged and we toasted both their and Elyse and Eivinds impending nuptuals! Congrats to both happy couples, we are all very much looking forward to your weddings. The kids are super excited to be E&E's flower girl and ring bearer!

Album #2: Universal Studios & The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
On Christmas Day we all went to Universal Studios (US), mostly for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWHP)! Christmas Day was the only day Jose had off for the week, so we all splurged and got the Express Pass so we could get the most out of the park in one day. It was incredible! So much fun! We are all huge Potter fans so we were beside our Muggle selves with glee. As soon as we got to US, we made a beeline for WWHP. I was just so completely impressed and overwhelmed with the place, I even got a bit verklempt. It was perfect. The only thing that would've made the experience slightly better was fewer people, but it was Christmas Day, and, besides, we were all in childlike raptures so it was all good. A few highlights:

I dressed the kids up in robes and wands, so cute!

Butterbeer! So delicious! The none frozen one is better. Buttery and fizzy at once.

This is what skipping to the front of the line for the first ride of the day looks like. We were so stoked (and felt a teensy weensy bit guilty, just a bit). Still, this saved us HOURS in line. Yay for being able to afford to pay for stuff!

WWHP was gor-geous!

Ollivanders!

Jose decided he wanted to put his money where his wand is so he bought himself a fancy robe that is only available at the park. Elyse and Eivind followed suit. Apparently those robes are so fancy, they have wand pockets inside! And, Elyse went into Ollivanders and was chosen out of the crowd to have a wand choose her. Seriously, how awesome is that? Check out the video in the photo album of her using her fancy wand.

The other rides were awesome too!

The day was EPIC! Click on the link to the photo album for more photos and videos.

Album #3: The King & I
Jose invited us to The King & I Holiday Party. It was at a bar/bowling alley that apparently used to be Marilyn Monroe's old apartment. Fancy. The kids then went to see The King & I with Lola, Gramps and Grandmom while Adrian and I watched the new Star Wars movie.

Album #4: Venice Beach
We spent a day walking through Venice and Venice Beach. We visited Dusty and Marie-Aimee, then had a great lunch. Our hotel had a fantastic hot tub, so the kids spent a lot of chilly nights in it.

I must also add Gramps' photos from Venice! Click here to take a look.

We also spent some time with the LA Llana relatives. They live in Pasadena so we headed over there and spent the day with them. Their neighborhood has great Christmas lights so we walked around before dinner to check them out. We headed back to Venice for the New Year's Eve party at Dusty and Marie-Aimee's.

We had a fantastic time in LA. Thanks so much to Ninong and Tito Erik for making it all possible!
