November 2018

November activities included:

• A house party full of middle-aged parents! We all had babysitters, so a great time was had by all!
• More fall foliage
• More fall soccer (it was pretty cold and wet at the end of the season!)
• More IP Filipino folk dancing lessons for Max
• The kids doing a fitness YouTube video
• Veronica and her friends built a little building block Winchester at Kids' Corner
• The IP Christmas Tiangge (bazaar)
• Marching in the Winchester Veteran's Day Parade
• A trip to the Asian grocery store and the kids discovering Yakult!
• The first snow of the season!
• A viewing of a fantastic documentary about the International Science and Engineering Fair, complete with a Q&A session with some of the kids in the documentary. Fittingly, the viewing was @MIT.

KC Halloween Shorts 2018

Kids' Corner (our after school program) has a yearly tradition called the Halloween Shorts. Each room makes a short Halloween-themed video where the kids that are interested act in the videos. This year Max and our neighbor Paige were the main characters in the K-1 Room Halloween Short. Veronica was also in the 2-3 Room Halloween Short. You can watch both shorts in this video.



Two years ago the K-1 Room made a particularly good video playing off of the Netflix show "Stranger Things". Veronica was in it and it was very cleverly done. Click here to go to that blog post.

Halloween 2018

For Halloween we were super happy to have Jose/Ninong visit! It was a jam-packed day. While Adrian and I were on the Plimoth Plantation field trip (click here to go to that blog post) with Veronica, Jose volunteered at the Halloween party in Max's classroom at school. After coming back from the field trip, Veronica went to her weekly dance classes, then the kids carved their pumpkins. After the pumpkins, we got dressed in our costumes, put the lit pumpkins and a bowl of candy for the trick-or-treaters out on the front stoop, and headed to a Halloween party. The party was a group of parents we've made friends with through Veronica's soccer team and almost everyone has a third grade girl and a first grade boy. All the girls are friends and all the boys are friends, but of course they don't really play with each other. We had chips and guacamole, pizza, and grown-up drinks (crucial for parenting while trick-or-treating) and went trick-or-treating! It's so much more fun when Ninong comes along, too. This year we were: Voltron (Max), Voltron's paladins Shiro (Jose) and Keith (me), Star Trek's Commander Riker (Adrian), and Maleficent (Veronica). I even bumped into another Kieth! But he(she) was in Keith civies.

Plimouth Plantation 31Oct2018

On the last day of October (Halloween), the third graders of Veronica's school took a field trip to Plimoth Plantation. Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum located in Plymouth, MA. The best parts of the plantation are the English Village, which attempts to replicate the settlement of the Pilgrims, and the Wampanoag Homesite, a recreation of a Wampanoag home site. What was interesting was that the English Village was occupied with actors who were playing the parts of the real Pilgrims who lived in the village in 1624, complete with accents and period dress. In contrast, the Wampanoag home site was occupied by people with Native American ancestry (not just Wampanoag) who demonstrate and explain how the Wampanoags lived and interacted with the Pilgrims during that time. They were not in character like in the English Village, but were in period Wampanoag dress. I was struck by the distinction and how it exemplified the still awkward and complicated relationship this government has with the Native Americans today. Anyone who grew up in this area took this field trip as a child. Since we had never been, Adrian and I both decided to chaperone. It was great fun and such an amazing learning experience. Not just for Veronica, but for Adrian and me. Veronica had been studying the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims and it was great to see her connect what she had learned to the history come to life in Plimoth Plantation. Some highlights include: two Wampanoag men burning out a canoe, sitting in a summer and a winter Wampanoag wetu(house), an English woman plucking a real chicken for the kids, an English woman making various salves with herbs and animal fat, Veronica pushing a wheelbarrow and chasing down chickens, and the fall foliage! I hope our schedules allow us to chaperone again when Max takes the same field trip as a third grader.

• A trip to the emergency room for Max (he was fine, just a super sore gut muscle)
• Fall soccer for both kids
• Max learning a Filipino folk dance at IP
• Halloween window painting in the town center (squeezed in before soccer games!)
• Picking out pumpkins
• The Kids' Corner Haunted House for charity
• A couple of fancy meals to celebrate my birthday
• Toasting the Red Sox winning the World Series (GO SOX!)

Alaska 2017: Adrian's Photos

I (finally) uploaded Adrian's Alaska photos to my albums. Adrian took these with his DSLR camera (whereas I just use my phone for all photos). For completeness, I'm sharing them here. This was from our Alaska cruise after Elyse and Eivind's gorgeous Pacific Northwest wedding in July 2017. We figured since we were in the area, we would join my cousin on one of her cruises. She works for Holland America as a Guest Relations Manager. She really took care of us, we had a fantastic time!

K-1 Newsletter Weeks of 11/3-11/21 Theme: Community Important Dates: Friday Night Out- 12/7, 12/21 (Register online now!) Dreidel Tournament- 12/5 Nutcracker Performance- 12/6 Holidays Around The World- 12/13 K-1 Reindeer Games- 12/12 4:15-5:00pm K-1 Holiday Caroling at the Mount Vernon House- 12/20 4:00-5:00pm Epic Night Out- Saturday, April 6th (Mark your calendar now!) Reminders: The weather outside is getting frightful! A coat, hat and gloves would be delightful! We try and get outside as much as possible, even in the cold and snow. Please be sure to pack your child accordingly. If your child does not have the proper attire for the weather, they may have to stay inside during outdoor recess. PROJECTS We have been doing a lot of community focused projects in the K-1 room these last few weeks. The K-1ers have been working on a Winchester Diorama with Jillian. The kids painted boxes representing different buildings in the community and they have been put on display in the hallway above the cubbies. Other projects have included making houses out of modeling clay, scrap paper turkeys, thankful trees and paper placemats. BIG GROUP ACTIVITIES The K-1 room did a Big Group Art project using scraps of paper and oil pastels, the kids made pictures of their favorite place in our community. SPECIAL EVENTS: Good Deed Party! The K-1ers earned their very first Good Deed Party of the school year. The kids earn a good deed party by being caught doing a good deed by a teacher. When the teacher sees them doing something good, we write it down and put it in our good deed box. Every Friday, the good deeds are read aloud and a marble is put into our deed-o-meter. Once the meter reaches an arrow, the kids have earned a party. Each party has a unique theme or activity. For this party, our theme was "P is for party". We enjoyed Pirates booty and pink lemonade for snack. We played with Mr. Potato heads and purple and pink play dough. We created letter "P" animals out of construction paper, little paper penguins out of plates, pompoms out of yarn and popsicle pilgrim puppets! It was a particularly perfect party and the kids had plenty of fun! Italian Feast! The K-1ers enjoyed our annual Italian Feast! The whole program came together in the gym to enjoy a wonderful lunch of baked ziti, salad and garlic bread. To top it all off, we had brownie sundaes for dessert! We got some energy out outside and finished the day with a movie.

Reminders: * All non-school day programming (Election Day, February/April Vacation weeks) have been posted on our website! Sign up in advance if you know you need the coverage! * As the weather get cooler, please provide labelled hat, gloves/mittens and coat daily! We are outside as much as possible!! Also, please update your child's spare clothing to be seasonally appropriate! THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING WELCOME BACK NIGHT!! Projects We wrapped up a fun two weeks of Fall-o-ween themed projects. Highlights include: multi-colored Halloween shaped sugar cookies, shrinky dinks, Tazmanian Football, Lego kit creations, Sculpey clay monsters, mosaic window pumpkins, Halloween finger puppets, oil pastel haunted houses, pumpkin tachistoscopes & Ultimate Basketball. Big Group Activities The K-1 room did a fun Big Group Science. We had science stations and the children rotated through each station getting to experience and experiment with all the fun supplies. The stations were all different and each teacher asked different questions/had challenges for their groups. We played with magnets, geoboards, tape measurers, scales and human body x rays. Weighing Different Toys Fun With Magnets SPECIAL EVENTS/FIELD TRIPS We had a ton of Halloween fun at Kids' Corner these past two weeks. We had our Haunted House Food Pantry Fundraiser which was wonderful! We also had three early release days in the a row. On the 24th, the children got to play Fall-o-ween games which are a variety of fun themed games offered by the teachers and children get Halloween prizes. On the 25th, we all went pumpkin-picking at Smolak Farms and enjoyed apple cider donuts, playing on the playground and visiting some animals! On the 26th, the K-1ers got to decorate their pumpkins using a variety of art supplies. It was a wonderful few weeks! Fall-O-Ween Face Paint! Pumpkin Picking at Smolak Farms Hayride! Playground Fun! How we all felt during the trip... Create Your Own Creature Rice Krispies! Fix My Frankenstein Puzzle! Fall-O-Ween Ring Toss Apple Cider Donuts! ...how we all felt by the end of the trip :) Pumpkin Decorating!
